Kim Taeyang’s debut film “Mimang” is a beautiful exploration of time and its inevitable impact on the heart of Seoul and its inhabitants. The Korean word “mimang” embodies a complex range of emotions, including being unable to make sense from ignorance, being unable to forget what one wants to forget, and searching far and wide. Through the lens of Kim, these interpretations of “mimang” unfurl in three intertwined chapters, shot over four years, that explore how time, surroundings, and individuals evolve and change over time in the gorgeous city of Seoul.

Original Title: 미망
Directed by: Kim Taeyang
Year: 2023
Country: South Korea
Length: 92 minutes

The movie starts with a chance occurrence: a man mistakenly getting off at the wrong train station. This simple event leads to a complex series of reunions and memories. As he wanders the streets, he unexpectedly meets an old friend, reigniting a relationship that had been lost over time, even if for just a moment. They both embark on personal journeys – her as part of a panel celebrating Korea’s cinema centenary, and him delving into the world of urban sketching. Their conversations flow naturally, alternating between playful banter and deep, personal, and philosophical reflections. Through their dialogues, they unearth forgotten pasts, confront the cyclical nature of life, and grapple with the concepts of memory and change.

The structure of “Mimang” consists of artfully crafted chapters, each of which represents one of the meanings of the title. The titles are symbolic of a fleeting moment in the characters’ lives, reflecting their journey and the impact that a single word can have. These chapters offer a profound insight into the characters’ inner worlds and emotions, shedding light on their yearnings, regrets, confusions, and desires.

Director Kim transforms Seoul into a realm full of lost romance and nostalgic charm. As the main characters walk through the city streets, the colors of the city constantly change, bringing it to life. The street lanterns, shop lights, and dynamic play of shadows create a visual symphony, that beautifully illuminates the actor’s faces. This is especially evident in the second chapter of the film. The change in colors throughout the different chapters captures not only the physical transformation of Seoul throughout the years but also acts as a mirror for the changing dynamics between the characters. The streets bear witness to their changing fortunes, relationships, and the passage of time.

“Mimang” is a stunning portrayal of the lasting impact of memories, chance meetings, and the significance of a single word. Through stunning visuals and thought-provoking dialogue, Kim Taeyang invites us to reflect on our own connection with time, memories, and the echoes of past words. the film serves as a reminder of the enduring power of memories and the importance of cherishing each fleeting moment.

“Mimang” screened at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival as part of its Discovery lineup.
